ASSE’s Public Relations department works daily with local, national, trade and sometimes international media, in an ongoing effort to increase awareness of workplace safety; occupational safety, health and environmental (SH&E) issues; and the SH&E profession. The ASSE President serves as the key national spokesperson. ASSE taps into its membership and defines what issues and topics the public should be made aware of. PR monitors the news and looks ahead at topics of interest to the media now and in the future, and forwards the SH&E information to the media. ASSE PR provides members with many tools, such as news releases, brochures and fact sheets, to use in working with the media and key stake-holders in getting SH&E topics and issues out into the public domain. PR also assists ASSE chapters and sections in reaching out to their community and local media.
Through the annual North American Occupational Safety and Health week (NAOSH), ASSE, its members and partners work to increase awareness of occupational safety, health and the environment through NAOSH activities throughout North America in early May.
To ensure that safety and health remains a national focus, Adele Abrams, esq., is ASSE's legislative and regulatory consultant in Washington, DC. In addition, ASSE prepares position statements in response to, and in anticipation of, key safety and health legislation and regulation. It publishes regular ASSE Perspectives, monthly Regulatory News and monthly columns in Professional Safety Journal. Governmental Affairs publications are published on the Government Affairs section of this web site. ASSE also conducts research studies in various areas, including compensation and needs assessments.
